Darbhanga Gets Green Light for Cargo & Logistics Hub Near Airport; A New Flight Path to Development for Mithila
Darbhanga / Patna, January 14, 2026
Darbhanga Airport Cargo Hub: In a landmark decision aimed at accelerating economic growth in the Mithila region and northern Bihar, the Government of Bihar has approved land acquisition for Darbhanga Airport Cargo Hub, a major cargo and logistics hub near Darbhanga Airport. The clearance was granted by Chief Minister Shri Nitish Kumar, marking a significant step in enhancing the region’s infrastructure and investment appeal.
Under the new plan, more than 50 acres of land will be acquired for the project, with an estimated compensation of around ₹138 crore to landowners. The initiative includes development of a modern air cargo hub, logistics park, and an “aerocity” featuring luxury hotels and commercial facilities, poised to transform Darbhanga into a vibrant economic zone rather than just an airport city.
Boosting Trade, Jobs and Connectivity
Officials and analysts say the cargo and logistics hub will unlock thousands of direct and indirect jobs, particularly benefiting farmers, traders, MSMEs and exporters who will gain faster and more efficient access to air cargo services. Reduced transportation costs and improved market linkages are expected to spur growth in agricultural and non-agricultural sectors alike.
Earlier approvals by the AAI Cargo Logistics & Allied Services Company Limited (AAICLAS) for a domestic air cargo terminal at Darbhanga have already laid the groundwork for this expansion, which will facilitate movement of perishables – including fruits, vegetables and pharmaceutical products – across India and beyond.
A Strategic Hub with Wider Impact
The proposed aerocity, with its high-end hotel infrastructure and business amenities, is expected to attract tourism, foreign and domestic investment, and heightened commercial activity to the region. The development could help position Darbhanga Airport as a key aviation and logistics centre in North Bihar, supporting both passenger and cargo flows.
Experts view the move as a historic step for the Mithila region, aligning with broader efforts for balanced regional growth through improved infrastructure, connectivity, and economic diversification. With the new approval in place, preparations for detailed planning and construction are expected to gain momentum in the coming months.
What’s Next
With modern logistics capabilities on the horizon, Darbhanga’s rich agricultural produce – famously including litchis and other perishables – could reach national and international markets more swiftly, further enhancing farmers’ incomes and adding economic resilience to the region. Recent data reflects a significant increase in air cargo traffic from Darbhanga, underscoring the potential of sustained infrastructure upgrades.
The state government’s vision to make Darbhanga Airport Cargo Hub, appears firmly set on into a gateway for trade and development, signalling a new chapter for Mithila’s economic journey.
