Darbhanga Set to Emerge as a New Railway Growth Hub Under Centre’s Ambitious Plan

Darbhanga is fast emerging as a new centre of railway development under the Government of India’s ambitious infrastructure push, with Indian Railways planning major upgrades to increase operational capacity and improve passenger services across the region.
As part of a nationwide plan, Indian Railways has set a target to double the train-originating capacity in 48 major cities by 2030. The list includes several key stations in Bihar such as Patna, Muzaffarpur, Darbhanga, Gaya, and Bhagalpur, signalling a strong focus on strengthening the state’s rail network.
Darbhanga to get a Mega Coaching Terminal
Under the proposed plan, Darbhanga will be developed into a mega coaching terminal, designed to handle the rising demand for passenger trains and better manage rail operations.
A Mega Coaching Complex, particularly proposed around the Shisho Halt area, is expected to significantly expand facilities for train parking, washing, maintenance, and overall operations. Officials believe this upgrade will ease congestion and improve the station’s ability to manage more trains efficiently.
Better punctuality, smoother travel on key rail corridor
With improved infrastructure and increased handling capacity, the project is expected to reduce waiting time for trains, enhance punctuality, and make travel more seamless along the Muzaffarpur–Patna–Darbhanga–Gaya rail corridor, one of the most important routes for passengers in the region.
Boost for Mithila’s rail-led development
The project has been planned keeping in mind the growing number of passengers, especially from the Mithila region, where rail connectivity plays a crucial role in daily travel, education, and migration for work.
Beyond passenger convenience, the development is expected to create a wider economic impact. Authorities anticipate that it will generate local employment opportunities, strengthen logistics support systems, and help Darbhanga grow into a major railway and logistics hub in north Bihar.
If implemented as planned, the initiative could mark a significant shift in Darbhanga’s role—from being a key regional station to becoming a strategic centre for railway operations and development in Bihar.
