Dr. S. M. Nawab was an Indian surgeon, medical educator, and academic administrator who served as Principal of Darbhanga Medical College. He is noted for his contributions to medical education in Bihar, including his role in the establishment of new medical colleges, and for his involvement in social and technical education initiatives.
Education and Training
Dr. Nawab completed his MBBS from King George Medical College, Lucknow. He pursued advanced professional training in the United Kingdom and obtained the following qualifications:
- FRCS (Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons), London
- FICS (Fellow of the International College of Surgeons), London
- MRCOG (Member of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists), London
He was also a Fellow of the International College of Anatomy (USA).
Career
Dr. Nawab began his academic and clinical career at Patna Medical College, where he served as a faculty member and surgeon. He was later transferred to Darbhanga Medical College, where he held senior academic and administrative positions and eventually served as Principal.
As an academic administrator, he was associated with strengthening teaching standards, clinical training, and institutional governance within government medical colleges in Bihar.
Institution Building
Dr. Nawab (a surgeon of national fame) played an active role in the establishment of medical institutions in the state of Bihar. He was involved in the founding of:
- Sri Krishna Medical College, Muzaffarpur
- Katihar Medical College, Katihar
He served as the founding Principal of both institutions and contributed to developing their academic structures and administrative systems during their formative years.
Social and Educational Work
In addition to his medical career, Dr. Nawab was active in social service and educational development. He served as President of the Jagannath Mishra Institute of Technology (JMIT), Darbhanga, an institution today known as Darbhanga College of Engineering. In this role, he was associated with the promotion of technical education in the Mithila region of Bihar.
