Darbhanga: A major infrastructure boost is on the way for north Bihar, especially Mithila region as the proposed new railway line between Laheriasarai and Saharsa has moved a step closer to execution. The Railways have released the proposed alignment for the project, clearing the path for construction work to begin in the near future.
The project is part of broader efforts to strengthen rail connectivity in Bihar alongside ongoing road infrastructure development. With most formalities now completed, officials indicate that groundwork for the project may start soon.
95-Kilometre New Rail Corridor Planned
According to available details, a 95-kilometre-long new rail line will be constructed between Laheriasarai and Saharsa at an estimated cost of ₹2,376 crore. The project includes significant engineering works, most notably a high-level bridge over the Kosi River, one of Bihar’s most challenging rivers.
In addition, the plan provides for:
- 14 major bridges
- 41 minor bridges
- 72 underpasses
These structures are aimed at ensuring safe rail operations and minimizing disruption to local road traffic.
Proposed Alignment Details
As per the released tentative alignment, the railway line will pass through several villages and localities, including Dekuli, Ughra, Khaira, Bithauli, Shankar Lohar, Havideeh, Sajanpur, Kanhauli, Kahua, Jagdishpur, Shivnagar Ghat, Ghanshyampur, Rasiyari, Kiratpur, Tarwara, Jamalpur, Mushariya, before reaching Mahishi and Bangaon, and finally terminating at Saharsa.
The alignment has been shared to facilitate further administrative processes and local-level coordination.
Ten New Stations to Be Developed
Officials said that 10 new stations will be constructed along the Laheriasarai–Saharsa rail line. Nearly 70 kilometres of the route will fall within the Darbhanga parliamentary constituency, enhancing regional connectivity.
In parallel, a separate 66-kilometre rail line between Laheriasarai and Muzaffarpur is also planned at an estimated cost of ₹1,213 crore. This section will include four stations and three halts.
Improved Access to AIIMS and Border Districts
One of the stations on the Laheriasarai–Muzaffarpur line will be located near the under-construction AIIMS Darbhanga, which is expected to significantly improve access to advanced healthcare. This connectivity will benefit passengers traveling from border districts such as Araria, Kishanganj, Purnia, and Katihar.
Employment and Regional Development
Apart from improved transport facilities, the project is expected to generate new employment opportunities during both construction and operational phases. Local residents anticipate better access to markets, healthcare, and education, contributing to overall socio-economic development in the region.
Once completed, the Laheriasarai–Saharsa rail line is expected to play a crucial role in strengthening Bihar’s rail network and improving connectivity across north and northeast Bihar.
